| We can all probably spot a few of the regular tactics of Bullshit practitioners. A few of the ones I recognize are shown below. |
|
Selective memory or coverage - this means the deliberate avoidance of any point unfavourable to the bullshitter's pitch, especially when the readers or listeners are all perfectly aware that there is an issue to be addressed. A variant of this is to claim that any information (about the unwelcome issue) has not reached the bullshitter. Labelling - this is my name for using emotionally charged words, usually to discredit opponents. Terms like Racist, Nazi, Fascist, Sexist are particularly common. Irregular verbs - by this I mean where the words describing the same actions change depending on whether it is I/we, you or he/she/they doing the action. An example of this is "I am steadfast, you are stubborn, he is pig-headed". Baseless imputation of motives - an example is "what our opponents really want to see is X". Biased attribution of cause and effect - an example is "this disaster was caused by our opponents' incompetence and crazy policies". The Gypsy's Curse - this means suggesting bad things will happen if you don't agree or comply. It might be a general scare, or an implied threat from the bullshitter. A very common bullshit tactic is denial of personal responsibility. This means giving a version of what happened that excludes any admission that the bullshitter was even partly responsible. A favourite of mine is what I call Ramps. This involves implying a scale of values according to which one should always go one step further if one is really serious about an issue, e.g. "holier than thou" (see a related essay). Rhetoric is a time honoured profession in which the pitch is carefully designed to have the best effect on listeners and readers. However rhetoric does not necessarily have to resort to bullshit - just think of Winston Churchill's World War 2 speeches.

Bullshit can of course be non-verbal as well:
